Mock-ups of Front Cover/Planning

Drawn out plan;

This is a drawn out version of what I want my magazine front cover layout to be like. I want the masthead in the background whilst one main image dominates the majority of the front cover. Across it I want a main story tagline with a font I'm thinking of doing on paper then scanning onto photoshop to edit and to give it a proffesional look ready for my magazine front cover. The main story tagline will be much like that of the 'POP' magazine I looked at in the post below. Unlike the 'POP' magazine I will also have some, (probably three), other features within a space on the cover. I want my image to be in black and white with either a white or grey background, I haven't decided on this yet; although I am gravitating towards a grey background. I want my colour scheme to be quite dimmed down not 'bright and boisterous', to give it a feel of quality rather than gimmicky.

Digital Mock-up;

Above is a digital mock-up of what I want my magazine to look something like using an image of Daisy Lowe I found on the internet. I deliberately chose this image as it has the same 'black & white' effect with a grey background as what I'm hoping to achieve on from my own images. I have chosen to use a burgundy/redish colour as my main colour as it contrasts well with the greys though it's not too 'out there'. I also like the font which I have used for the 'Lowe', so I may just use this on my original rather than drawing it out to scan in. I would prefare this if the whole image was slightly to the right, to be more central; as it would then allow more space for the three features down the side, it would also stop it looking a little 'lop-sided'. When I take my own photographs I will take this into consideration when deciding on a pose.

Here are some of the other colour combinations I was thinking of using;
As you can see I decided to go with the first set of two colours but made the 'pinkish' colour more burgundy. I chose this as it gave off a more 'vintage' feel which I'm going for with my magazine. As older things always seem to have better quality. Although I did also like the second set of colours; black and turquoise, but I thought it'd be a bit too grim to have a lot of black on there as a main colour. Having said this, when I come to make my front cover with my own images I may once again play around with the other colour combinations to see which fit the 'feel' I want my magazine to give off, to represent it in the most positive way. Whichever colour combination I go for will be my house theme which will run throughout the magazine's contents page and double page spread. This is why it's important to ensure the colours I use will work well not only on the front cover but will also work well to give the magazine continuity throughout.

The next step I need to take is to take my photos, as everything else can be created around the image, there's no point in making all the add ons if they're not going to work with the images I take.

Feedback;

I have asked some people within my target audience to provide me with some feedback on whether this type of magazine would appeal to them and what I could do to improve when I do my own. I have asked for this feedback in the form of comments on this post.

  1. Really like the design a lot, but personally would adjust the "Daisy" and the text under the masthead just to be a little bit more visible

  2. Looks sweet, Retro and pretty hot. Maybe change the font of the price to one you have already used kinda looks out of place also the "LOWE" move a bit right as the right hand side looks a little empty =]

  3. 10/10 would read again
    I really like it, but some of the font could be more of a contrast against what's behind it to stand out more!
