Final Pieces

Above is my final college magazine front cover and my final draft of my contents page.

Evaluation;
Overall, I am reasonably happy with the outcome of my front cover and contents page, although if I had more time I'd prefare to retake a photo which would be better quality. And also, looking back I wish I'd have put more effort into my 'masthead' on the front cover so that it looked more interesting and striking. think that i've kept to my house theme well and used many of the magazine conventions. On the whole my magazine probably doesn't appeal to it's target audience of 16-19 year olds as much as it could, but in future I could carry out research with my target audience to see reactions to my piece before submitting it as my final product.

For the language I have used a masthead title for my magazine which would appeal to the audience as it's an abbreviated term for 'Wyke Sixth Form' - W6F. This gives it a 'younger' feel.
The institution is the fact that this is a college magazine.
The ideology of my magazine is that it would be providing information to college attenders and would include important information alongside more 'casual' news stories from the college.
The target audience was students aged 16-19 at the designated college, (wyke).
I have represented it in a way which would attract the students to want to read it and get more copies in future.

Contents Page

Above is my ICT draft of my contents page for the college magazine. If I were to carry this through to make it properly I would keep the same colour schemes and image styles to keep with my magazine 'house' style.

Above is a more detailed plan of my contents page. If I were to carry on doing this I would also use a grey background as my front cover background is quite grey.

Front Cover Development

Above is my ICT draft for my college magazine front cover. For my final cover I have kept to this original draft out copy.

Above is my first up draft out of the front cover minus the short story headlines down the side. This would be my basic template if I were to do more issues of the magazine; keeping the masthead and website in the same places.
Above is my final copy of my magazine front cover.

Photos for College Magazine

The above is the first photo I took, I have chosen not to use this as it is too close up, and I needed a photo in 'medium' range.

The above is the second photo I took, I clearly couldn't have used this as it's blurred a lot. Although, I could've used this photo if I wanted to have a sort of 'blurry' artistic front cover.
The above is the final photo which I have decided to use as it fits the brief, and it's the best photo I took.

Idea Development

Title; My magazine is going to be for Wyke; therefore I'll need a magazine name which relates to Wyke Sixth Form College. Here are someof my ideas so far;
Colour Scheming; For my magazine I will need to have a uniform colour scheme. I was firstly going to use greens but then I thought it'd clash too much with the photos I took so I decided to use blue and grey to keep it pretty simple. This also matches in with my photo giving it a more professional feel.

Analysis of Two Existing College Magazines

In this post I will be analysing two existing college magazines using LIIAR. I can see what their good and bad points are and it will help me make my magazine better than the examples; as I can use any good points and improve any bad points.

Magazine Example One:
This magazine cover is for East Riding College and is called 'Student Life'. It has many of the conventions a college magazine should have. For example, within the layout there is a mast head, image, logo and smaller headlines of what’s in the magazine. This college magazine looks like it'd be aimed at older more academic students, it would fit better for a university than a college in my opinion. For my magazine I am going to try to make it appeal to a more young/edgey audience of students aged 16-19.

Magazine Example Two:
This magazine cover is more 'up to date' and modern than the previous example so I hope to base my magazine more to the 'youngness' of this one. The main image on this however is more of a 'graphicsy' sort of picture rather than a photo. Whereas in mine I shall be using a photo, but I could use the more technical edited sort of look of this and try to make mine a bit more edgy with some editing on photoshop.

LIIAR Interpretation of the Brief

Language: Thelanguage is the terminology of whichis used for the componentsof a magazine. For example, the masthead,main image and sell line. These are the conventions you'd find on a magazine front cover.
Institution: This would be companies such as; TV channels, magazines and radio stations.
Ideology: This is the idea which the magazine would be selling. An example of this is the ideology of a fashion magazine would be fashion.
Audience: An example of the target audience for a college magazine would be students aged 16-19.
Representation: Represents a certain something or someone. For example, how we see a character on screen, the way you see something is the way it's represented.

Preliminary Task

Preliminary exercise: using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP.
